Terms and Conditions

Please read these terms and conditions carefully. They contain important information that you need to be aware of before booking. By accessing or using our website you agree to be legally bound by these terms and conditions.

  1. Discovery Travel is not responsible for any losses, damage, death, injuries, or claims whatsoever arising from, connected with, or related to any activities engaged during your holiday. You engage in all such activities at your own risk.
  2. Walking holidays involve a degree of physical exertion and it is the customer’s responsibility to ensure that they are physically fit enough to undertake the holiday they book. If you are in any doubt please contact Discovery Travel for general advice about the holiday you plan to undertake and contact your medical practitioner for specific medical advice relating to you and the holiday you are proposing to undertake.
  3. The ability to map read and navigate are essential requirements for undertaking one of our holidays. It is your responsibility to ensure that you and your party members have the appropriate skills, levels of fitness and equipment for the holiday. While Discovery Travel will provide map(s), guide book(s) and notes on how to find accommodation each day, there may be occasions (such as where a usual route is blocked for some reason or two route options are available) where route decisions have to be made on the day by you and you will need map reading and navigational skills in order to make judgements that safeguard you and any other members of your party.
  4. Some of the routes of holidays that we organise pass through isolated, sparsely-populated areas which can be exposed to rapidly changing, and bad, weather. The responsibility for ensuring the safety of the party rests solely with each party member. You should follow the Countryside Code (England and Wales) and the Outdoor Access Code (Scotland), adhere to any warnings and advisory notices along the route and act prudently and sensibly at all times.
  5. As a precaution customers should avail themselves of the appropriate emergency services (police, ambulance, mountain rescue etc) telephone numbers before embarking on their holiday.
  6. We strongly recommend you take out adequate travel insurance to cover you against cancellation, personal accident, illness and loss or theft of personal possessions or money. Such insurance is not included in the cost of your holiday. You must ensure that your insurance policy covers mountain walking and its associated risks. It is prudent to take out your insurance policy as soon as you have booked your trip with Discovery Travel and we have confirmed that all your accommodation has been booked, as deposit payment are non-refundable once we have confirmed that all the accommodation for your trip has been reserved.
  7. We reserve the right to cancel any holiday for whatever reason at any time and in such an event our maximum liability will be the cost of the holiday cancelled.
  8. Where a holiday has to be cancelled in whole or in part as a result of events outside the control of Discovery Travel (such as bad weather, cancelled flights or industrial action) we accept no responsibility for the resulting loss to the client and no refund will be payable.
  9. Whilst every effort will be made to provide holidays as described on our website, we reserve the right to vary routes and the location of accommodation. Transfers to accommodation from the walking route may be required, the cost of which is included in our quoted prices. Where accommodation in an alternative location is required, we will endeavour to ensure that the facilities are of a similar quality to those described on our website.
  10. The customer will be liable for the cost of damage to any equipment provided by Discovery Travel, which is not the result of reasonable wear and tear.
  11. We accept no responsibility for customers’ cars wherever they may be parked during the course of a holiday.
  12. We accept no liability for damage to customers’ own luggage or other equipment they may bring on a Discovery Travel holiday howsoever this damage is caused. If your luggage is being transferred for you each day, we recommend that you do not leave high value or fragile items in your bags. Baggage moving companies, or taxis that are contracted to move luggage, are not insured for damage to valuable items contained within bags. Bags do sometimes get stacked up in the back of vans so if you have delicate items, such as electronic equipment, it is advisable to carry them in your day bag if possible, or else not bring them at all. Travel insurance should be taken out to cover possible damage to any valuable or fragile items that are left in bags that are being transported for you.
  13. Where train tickets are booked or cars hired by us for customers, this is done subject to the carrier’s/hirer’s terms and conditions and we accept no liability for their failure to provide the contracted services.
  14. All bookings made are accepted by both parties, as subject to the terms laid out in these conditions.
  15. These terms and conditions shall form a contract subject only to English Law and any disputes shall be settled only in English courts and tribunals.
  16. While taking every care, Discovery Travel cannot be held responsible for injury or ill health affecting you or a member of your party during your holiday. Except in the case of death and personal injury, any claim against Discovery Travel, its partners or employees shall be limited to a maximum of the amount paid by the claimant for his/her individual holiday.
  17. Force Majeure: Except where otherwise expressly stated in these Terms and Conditions we will not be liable or pay you compensation if our contractual obligations to you are affected by any event which we or the supplier(s) of the service(s) in question could not, even with all due care, foresee or avoid. These events can include, but are not limited to, war, threat of war, civil strife, terrorist activity and its consequences or the threat of such activity, riot, the act of any government or other national or local authority including port or river authorities, industrial dispute, natural or nuclear disaster, fire, chemical or biological disaster and adverse weather conditions, epidemics and pandemics, unavoidable technical problems with transport and all similar events outside our or suppliers’ control. Advice from the UK Foreign Office or your own country’s equivalent body to avoid or leave a particular country may constitute Force Majeure.
  18. If any provision of these Terms and Conditions is held void, illegal or unenforceable for any reason, such provision shall be severed and the remainder of the provision hereof shall continue in full force and effect as if the terms had been agreed with the void provisions eliminated. In the event of a holding of unenforceability so fundamental as to prevent the accomplishment for the purpose of the agreement, the parties shall immediately commence good faith negotiations to remedy such unenforceability.

Booking Conditions

  1. A deposit of 20% of the total cost of the holiday is payable upon booking. Please note that this does NOT confirm your booking as we still have to reserve your accommodation. Once we confirm all your accommodation is booked, the deposit is non-refundable. In the unlikely event that we cannot obtain accommodation for your trip, the deposit will be refunded.
  2. The outstanding balance is payable 6 weeks (42 days) prior to the start date of the holiday (the date of the first night of accommodation we have booked).
  3. Cancellations must be received in writing (letter or email) and can only be made by the lead person who made the booking. Cancellation charges are as follows:
-For a cancellation made more than 42 days before the start date of the holiday, the 20% deposit will be forfeit and no other charges will apply.
-For a cancellation made between 41 days and 29 days before the start date of the holiday, the charge will be 50% of the total cost of the holiday.
-For a cancellation made 28 days or less before the start of the holiday, or while the holiday is in progress, no refund can be given.
  4. Where a client requests changes to the dates of their itinerary that requires a wholesale re-booking of accommodation, an administrative charge equivalent to 20% of the value of the booking will be levied, in addition to the deposit that has already been paid. This fee is levied because the re-booking of a holiday with different dates to those originally requested requires the equivalent work to an entirely new booking.

Supplements

  1. The single person supplement and solo walker supplement differs for each walk and is calculated when completing the booking form.
  2. The cost of extra nights is stated on each itinerary page and will be added to the booking.

Method of payment

  1. Debit or credit cards. Payments are taken securely through Worldpay.
  2. By bank transfer. Sort code and account number will be supplied upon request.
