Herriot Way
A circular walk through the northern Yorkshire Dales
Highlights
The Herriot Way is a circular walk showcasing the northern Yorkshire Dales and Moors, chiefly Wensleydale and Swaledale, made famous by the books and television series about local vet James Herriot.
Whether you are familiar with the James Herriot stories or not, you cannot but be captivated by these beautiful Dales, steeped in history and tradition and still unspoiled in spite of the world-wide fame they have now achieved.
This wonderful walk is nicely divided into manageable daily distances, during which you will wander along beautiful valleys, next to rushing streams and over high, open moorland. The landscape is dotted with traditional farmhouses and dry-stone walls and is punctuated by towns and villages that have been at the heart of rural life for centuries. You will visit the small town of Hawes, home of Wensleydale cheese, and typical Dales villages such as Reeth and Askrigg (‘Darrowby’ in the Herriot series).
Natural attractions include Aysgarth Falls and Hardraw Force, the highest single drop waterfall in England, and the magnificent views from spots such as Great Shunner Fell.

Will was masterful in accommodating our needs as octogenarian walkers. All of our B&Bs on the trail were excellent and the taxis organised for us were all extremely reliable.
