West Highland Way
From Glasgow through the Highlands to Ben Nevis
Highlights
The world-renowned West Highland Way is the most popular long distance walk in Scotland, encompassing the spectacular scenery of Loch Lomond and the Highlands.
For many hikers, the West Highland Way is up there as one of their “must do” routes. And rightly so, because although it is only 96 miles long, it takes in a huge variety of landscapes and grants walkers views of some of the most fabulous scenery in the UK.
From its relatively low key starting point in a suburb of Scotland’s largest city Glasgow, within just a few miles of getting out into the countryside wonderful views of Scottish mountains open up. For 20 or so miles, the trail hugs the wooded shores of Loch Lomond before the landscape starts to take on the more rugged and dramatic appearance of the Highlands.
Following ancient tracks used by drovers and soldiers, you’ll cross the wild and desolate expanse of Rannoch Moor and follow steep-sided glacial valleys, including the stunning Glen Coe, site of one of the most infamous episodes of the Jacobite period. The walk culminates with views of Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest peak, that looms large above Fort William.
Most of the overnight stops on the route are small villages or hamlets where you’ll receive a warm welcome and be able to share your walking experiences with the many nationalities who come to appreciate this fabled Scottish landscape.
