About this trail

Your walk begins beneath the dramatic span of the Humber Bridge and heads west along the bank of the Humber from where you turn inland, passing through the village of Welton, where the notorious outlaw Dick Turpin was arrested at the Green Dragon Inn. The trail starts with gentle inclines as you move away from the Humber estuary, taking you through the small market town of Market Weighton, the pleasant villages of Londesborough and Millington, and on to the deserted medieval village of Wharram Percy, now an archaeological site.

The middle part of the walk follows the contortions of the Wolds landscape, snaking along intricate valley floors. As you climb higher onto the escarpment at the northern edge of the Wolds, there are splendid views of the Derwent Valley, the Vale of Pickering and the North Yorkshire Moors.  Your route then takes you in view of the North Sea before ending at the traditional seaside resort of Filey.

Terrain and navigation

The Yorkshire Wolds Way is a relatively undemanding trail, generally involving gentle inclines and paths that are well trodden and easy underfoot. After heavy rain the clay that is mixed in with the chalk of the area can make paths muddy and heavy going, so good boots and gaiters are recommended. If you are looking for an easy going and well-waymarked hike in an area that offers that “getting away from it all” feel, the Yorkshire Wolds way is a great choice.

Below are some suggestions for good places to spend an extra day or so.

Gannets nesting on Bempton Cliffs

Filey

Filey’s beach has been described as one of Britain’s best wild beach walks. A charming seaside resort Filey has its own food festival, nature reserve and museum. A short train ride south is Flamborough Head, home of the Bempton Cliffs RSPB nature reserve, famous for the half a million seabirds that nest there each year.

Market Weighton

A short bus or taxi journey from Market Weighton at the foot of the Wolds is Kilnwick Percy, home of the Madhyamaka Buddhist Centre, a place of contemplative reflection and perfect for a relaxing day out.  The Centre is situated in Kilnwick Percy Hall, a charming Grade II listed stately home set within 47 acres of grounds with woodland walks, parkland and a lake.

When to go

The weather in the UK can vary hugely so be prepared for all weathers whatever time of the year. April, May and June are when everything comes to life so it is very green, wild flowers are abundant and blossom abounds. July and August tend to be the warmest months, but it is rarely so warm as to be uncomfortable for walking. September is one of the most pleasant times in the countryside and is quieter as most people with children have finished their holidays. By October the days are getting shorter and the weather can be much more changeable.
